Network Components

IPSA includes a wide range of network components which allow full modelling of both AC and DC networks for all types of analysis. An extensive database of components is provided as standard to allow users to quickly build up network models for studies.

Synchronous Generators – PV, PQ and slack generator controls are provided, together with voltage control bandwidth.  Reactive power limits can be added. Full D-Q axis model with the ability to add governor and AVR models.

Utility Grid Infeed – A grid infeed model can be used to represent external networks based on peak and RMS LLL and LG fault contributions.

Induction Motors – Represented using single or double cage parameters with load torque-speed characteristics.  Doubly-fed machines for wind turbine modelling are provided. Controller models can be added to provide rotor voltage control as well as speed/power control. Speed and voltage protection included with all motors.

Transformers – Tap-changers with tap limits, relay bandwidth and compound voltage control.  Vector groups can be specified as well as auto-transformers and phase-shifting transformers.

Voltage Regulators – Also known as series or in-line voltage regulators these special transformers are typically used to provide voltage boost and buck on distribution networks up  to 33kV.

Static Loads – Static load model represents constant power loads.  These can be grouped and scaled with load transfers due to switching represented

Universal Machine – A generic constant power load or generator model that can be extended using a user defined dynamic model. Typically used to model manufacturer specific wind turbines as well as renewable energy sources such as PV arrays, batteries and energy storage devices.

Circuits and Branches – Unlimited rating sets can be added for overload checks.  Zero impedance and zero sequence branches both allowed.  Multi-section branches can be modelled to represent different cable or line types on the same circuit.

Circuit Breakers and Protection – Circuit breakers with intertripping schemes and protection devices can be added to branches and radial components

Protection Relays – IPSA comes with an extensive library of protection relays which can be modelled for protection grading studies. The relays also operate in other analysis studies allowing the cascade tripping of devices to be investigated during transient studies.

Harmonic Filters – The most widely used filter types are included, such as single and double tuned as well as C type.

Mechanically Switched Capacitors – Voltage or power factor control methods can be represented.

Static VAr Compensators – A built in SVC model provides a simple and quick method of modelling SVCs and Statcoms.

Plugin Models – Plugin models provide the user with unlimited flexibility to model any device under load flow, fault level and transient conditions. Application examples include modelling wind turbines, transformer inrush, composite loads and fault current limiters.

Network Controllers – Network controllers allow SCADA type controllers to be added to power system models. These provide the ability for a single controller model to interface with multiple network components using the Plugin models. Application examples include Wind Farm SCADA controllers and smart grid controllers.

DC Components – A full range of DC components, including AC/DC converters, batteries and motor-generator sets, is provided for the analysis of DC networks. The AC and DC networks are solved simultaneously allowing the analysis of composite networks.
