IPSA Power has developed a model of the DFIG machine in conjunction with the EEPS group at UMIST,
the DTI and several industrial participants.
The impetus for this development was the need to be able to study the effect of this new technology
when connected to the public network.
DFIG machines are becoming the norm for the manufacturers of large wind turbines.
The IPSA implementation can operate in either fixed speed or fixed speed and power factor modes.
The default dynamic model has over-current and over-speed protection
including the option for the DFIG to change to asynchronous mode (standard induction generation).
Specific controllers can be represented in detail using the User Defined Modelling (UDM) capability of IPSA.
This allows a block diagram representation of the controller and protection.
